DRDO demonstrates Solid Fuel Ducted Ramjet technology
DRDO demonstrated Solid Fuel Ducted Ramjet technology, the basis for long-range air-to-air missiles, at Chandipur on 3 February 2026.
On 3 February 2026 DRDO demonstrated Solid Fuel Ducted Ramjet (SFDR) technology from the Integrated Test Range at Chandipur, off Odisha. A ramjet breathes air rather than carrying all its oxidiser, which lets a missile keep its speed over long ranges; SFDR is the basis for long-range air-to-air missiles. The nozzle-less booster, the ramjet motor and the fuel-flow controller all performed as expected.

Question 1
Solid Fuel Ducted Ramjet technology, demonstrated by DRDO in February 2026, is mainly for developing what?
- AReusable launch vehicles
- BLong-range air-to-air missiles
- CSubmarine propulsion
- DCrewed space capsules
Show the answer and explanation
Correct answer: B
Explanation
DRDO says SFDR enables long-range air-to-air missiles.
An air-breathing motor keeps the missile fast late in flight, when a pure rocket would have burnt out.

Question 2
From where did DRDO demonstrate the Solid Fuel Ducted Ramjet in February 2026?
- ASatish Dhawan Space Centre, Sriharikota
- BPokhran Field Firing Range, Rajasthan
- CThe Integrated Test Range, Chandipur, Odisha
- DTBRL, Chandigarh
Show the answer and explanation
Correct answer: C
Explanation
The test was flown from ITR Chandipur, off the Odisha coast.
TBRL Chandigarh is where the Gaganyaan parachute was tested that month.

Question 3
What makes a ramjet different from a conventional rocket motor?
- AIt runs on liquid hydrogen alone
- BIt takes oxygen from the air instead of carrying all its oxidiser
- CIt can start from zero speed without a booster
- DIt works only outside the atmosphere
Show the answer and explanation
Correct answer: B
Explanation
A ramjet is air-breathing: it compresses incoming air by its own speed and burns fuel in it.
That is why it needs a booster first — in the February test, a ground booster took it to the required Mach number.
