Macroeconomics formulas and graphs for CUET Economics

Every formula, identity and graph in CUET Introductory Macroeconomics on one page: national income aggregates, real GDP, money supply and the money multiplier, RBI tools, consumption and saving, equilibrium income and the multiplier, inflationary and deflationary gaps, budget deficits, the balance of payments and the exchange rate. Read it the night before; the chapter lessons have the worked examples.

This is the short version of the thirteen Macroeconomics lessons. If a line here is not clear, the chapter it comes from is named in its heading.

Basic concepts and measuring national income

IdeaFormula or fact
Final goodReached its final user; capital goods are final
Net investmentGross investment − depreciation
Leakages and injectionsSaving, taxes, imports out; investment, G, exports in
Value of outputSales + change in stock
Value addedValue of output − intermediate consumption
Expenditure methodGDPMP=C+I+G+(X−M)\text{GDP}_{MP} = C + I + G + (X - M)
Income methodNDP at FC = compensation of employees + operating surplus + mixed income
Operating surplusRent + interest + profit
Left outTransfers, second-hand goods, shares, homemakers' work, capital gains

National income aggregates

IdeaFormula or fact
Gross → net− depreciation
Domestic → national+ NFIA
Market price → factor cost− (indirect taxes − subsidies)
National incomeNNP at FC
Basic pricesFC + production taxes − production subsidies
Personal disposable incomePersonal income − personal taxes − fees and fines
GDP deflatorNominal GDP÷Real GDP×100\text{Nominal GDP} \div \text{Real GDP} \times 100
GDP and welfareMisses distribution, non-monetary exchange, externalities

Money, banks and the RBI

IdeaFormula or fact
M1Currency with the public + demand deposits + other deposits with the RBI
M3M1 + net time deposits of banks
Money multiplier1÷r1 \div r; with cash drain (1+cdr)÷(cdr+rdr)(1 + cdr) \div (cdr + rdr)
Total depositsInitial deposit × multiplier; credit created = total − initial
High-powered moneyCurrency with the public + bank reserves; M = mm × H
Repo / reverse repoRBI lends to banks / RBI borrows from banks
CRR / SLRCash with the RBI / liquid assets with the bank
InflationRaise repo, CRR, SLR; sell securities; raise margins

Consumption, saving and equilibrium

IdeaFormula or fact
Consumption functionC=cˉ+bYC = \bar{c} + bY, b = MPC
Saving functionS=−cˉ+(1−b)YS = -\bar{c} + (1 - b)Y
IdentitiesMPC + MPS = 1; APC + APS = 1
Break-even incomecˉ÷MPS\bar{c} \div \text{MPS}: C = Y, S = 0
EquilibriumAD = output, or planned S = planned I
Equilibrium incomeY=(cˉ+Iˉ)÷(1−MPC)Y = (\bar{c} + \bar{I}) \div (1 - \text{MPC})
Investment multiplierk=1÷(1−MPC)=1÷MPSk = 1 \div (1 - \text{MPC}) = 1 \div \text{MPS}; ΔY = k × ΔI
Paradox of thriftEveryone saving more lowers income; saving stays = I

Excess and deficient demand

IdeaFormula or fact
Inflationary gapAD at full employment − full-employment output
Deflationary gapFull-employment output − AD at full employment
Excess demandPrices rise; real output cannot
Deficient demandOutput and jobs fall; underemployment equilibrium
RemediesFiscal: G and taxes. Monetary: rates, reserves, OMO, margins

Budget and deficits

IdeaFormula or fact
Capital receiptCreates a liability or reduces assets
Capital expenditureCreates an asset or reduces a liability
Revenue deficitRevenue expenditure − revenue receipts
Fiscal deficitTotal expenditure − (revenue receipts + non-debt capital receipts) = borrowing
Primary deficitFiscal deficit − interest payments

Open economy

IdeaFormula or fact
Balance of tradeExports of goods − imports of goods
Current accountTrade balance + services + income + transfers
Capital accountFDI, portfolio investment, borrowing, banking capital
Overall balanceCurrent + capital account = change in reserves
DepreciationMore ₹ per $ in a floating market
DevaluationGovernment lowers a fixed rate
Managed floatingMarket rate with RBI intervention (India since 1993)

Which graphs must you be able to read?

  • Consumption and the 45° line: C starts at cˉ\bar{c} and meets the 45° line at break-even.
  • Saving: starts at −cˉ-\bar{c} below the axis, crosses it at break-even.
  • AD and the 45° line: equilibrium where they meet; above the line output rises, below it falls.
  • S and I: equilibrium where the rising S meets the flat I.
  • Gaps: measured vertically at full-employment income.
  • Forex market: D$ slopes down, S$ slopes up; more demand depreciates the rupee.

What are the traps worth remembering?

  • Capital goods are final goods, not intermediate.
  • Transfers are never factor income.
  • Cheques are money but not legal tender.
  • Credit created = total deposits − initial deposit.
  • Break-even (S = 0) is not equilibrium.
  • The multiplier divides by the MPS, not the MPC.
  • Interest is revenue expenditure; repaying the loan is capital expenditure.
  • A higher rupees-per-dollar number is a weaker rupee.
