What gives Neptune its blue colour?

Question 81

EasyOriginal question

Neptune is the eighth and planet from the Sun, more than thirty times as far away as the Earth. It is dark, cold and extremely windy.

Like its neighbour Uranus, Neptune is called an ice giant. Under its thick, windy atmosphere of hydrogen, helium and methane lies a deep of water, ammonia and methane flowing over a solid about the size of the Earth. The methane in its air is what gives Neptune its deep blue colour.

The planet has six faint rings, which are very hard to see, and sixteen known moons.

Neptune's day is short, about sixteen hours. But its journey around the Sun is so long that one Neptune year lasts 165 Earth years. In other words, since it was discovered in 1846, Neptune has gone round the Sun only once.
