Question 231
EasyOriginal questionOn 23 August 2023, the Vikram lander of Chandrayaan-3 made a safe, soft landing on the Moon, and soon afterwards the Pragyan rover rolled out onto the surface.
The landing was in two ways. It made India only the fourth country ever to land on the Moon. And it made India the first to do so near the Moon's south pole, a region no country had landed in before.
To celebrate the success, the Government of India declared 23 August "National Space Day". The day is meant to be more than a memory. Across the country, events in July and August are held to interest and young people in space science and technology.
The celebrations have reached some unexpected places. In 2024, the Department of Fisheries held in coastal states on how space technology helps fishermen, from satellite communication and navigation at sea to observations from space that help the fishing industry. A landing on the Moon, it turns out, can be connected even to a fishing boat at sea.
