The Periodic Labour Force Survey is conducted by the National Statistical Office and began in 2017.
It replaced the employment and unemployment surveys that had been run only once every five years.
Since its sampling design was revamped in January 2025 it publishes monthly all-India estimates for rural and urban areas, alongside quarterly and annual ones.
Worth noting
The National Family Health Survey is a health and demography survey from a different ministry, and carries no unemployment rate. The January 2025 change also means PLFS figures from before and after that date are not directly comparable.
