CorrectNot quiteAnswer D

Correct answer: D

Explanation

  1. Sameer's ranks are among the students who PASSED: 12+30−1=4112 + 30 - 1 = 41 passed.

  2. Add those who failed and those who were absent: 41+6+2=4941 + 6 + 2 = 49.

Worth noting

41 counts only the students who passed. 47 adds the failed students but forgets the absent ones; they are still in the class. 43 adds only the absent students.
