Maxima & Minima · Question 15 of 80

Question 15

EasyOriginal question

At which point does f(x)=x3−12x+4f(x) = x^{3} - 12 x + 4 have a local minimum?

Options for question 15

CorrectNot quiteAnswer C

Correct answer: C

Explanation

  1. f′(x)=3(x−2)(x+2)f'(x) = 3 \left(x - 2\right) \left(x + 2\right).

  2. f′f' changes from negative to positive at x=2x = 2, so ff falls then rises there: a local minimum.

Worth noting

At x=−2x = -2 the sign changes the other way: that is the local maximum.
