Question 10

MediumOriginal question

a<0<ba < 0 < b. Which of these is always true?

Options for question 10

Show the answer and explanation
CorrectNot quiteAnswer D

Correct answer: D

Explanation

  1. A negative number times a positive number is negative: ab<0ab < 0.

  2. The others can fail: a=−5a = -5, b=1b = 1 gives a2>b2a^{2} > b^{2} and a+b<0a + b < 0; and 1a<0<1b\frac{1}{a} < 0 < \frac{1}{b} always.

Worth noting

a2<b2a^{2} < b^{2} holds only when aa is nearer 0 than bb; nothing says so.
