The Mission for Cotton Productivity (₹5,659.22 crore, 2026-31), approved 5 May 2026, aims to lift lint yield from about 440 to 755 kg/ha.
On 5 May 2026 the Union Cabinet approved the Mission for Cotton Productivity for 2026-27 to 2030-31, with ₹5,659.22 crore, to tackle falling yields and quality problems in cotton. It fits the government's '5F' vision: Farm to Fibre to Factory to Fashion to Foreign.
The mission will develop high-yielding, climate-resilient and pest-resistant seeds, spread techniques such as the High Density Planting System, promote extra-long-staple cotton, modernise ginning and strengthen cotton testing. Its first phase covers about 24 lakh hectares in 140 districts of 14 states, and it aims to lift yields from about 440 to 755 kg of lint per hectare by 2031.
