A tigress is released in Buxa Tiger Reserve
Tigress T138 from Valmiki (Bihar) was released in Buxa Tiger Reserve, West Bengal, on 2 October 2026.
On 2 October 2026, at the start of Wildlife Week, a tigress was released in Buxa Tiger Reserve in North Bengal, beginning a phased Tiger Reintroduction Programme to restore a self-sustaining tiger population there. The tigress, T138, was brought from Valmiki Tiger Reserve in Bihar. Buxa, declared a Tiger Reserve in 1983, had long been without a stable resident tiger population after habitat loss and a fall in prey. Since 2018 more than 800 chital have been released and about 380 hectares of grassland restored to prepare for the tiger's return.
