Question 13
MediumOriginal questionOn 22 October 2008, a PSLV rocket lifted off from Sriharikota carrying Chandrayaan-1, India's first to the Moon. The spacecraft weighed about 1,380 kg at launch and was built to circle the Moon at a height of 100 km, mapping its surface, its minerals and the chemicals in its rocks.
It was also an effort. Of the eleven scientific instruments on board, some were built in India and others came from the United States, the United Kingdom, Germany, Sweden and Bulgaria. Scientists from many countries were therefore waiting for the data it would send back.
The mission was planned to last two years. , it achieved its major objectives well before that, and in May 2009 its orbit was raised to 200 km. Chandrayaan-1 went round the Moon more than 3,400 times. On 29 August 2009, contact with the spacecraft was lost, and the mission came to an end after less than a year in orbit.
Even so, it had done what it set out to do, and it opened the way for the Chandrayaan missions that followed.
Why does the writer say "Even so" in the last paragraph?
Show the answer and explanation
Correct answer: A
Explanation
The paragraph before it ends with the bad news: contact was lost and the mission ended in under a year.
"Even so" turns to the other side: despite that, the mission had done what it set out to do.
Worth noting
The writer never explains why contact was lost, so that option adds something the text does not say.
