Question 92

MediumOriginal question

When Imran got off the bus at Shivaji Nagar, he noticed a brown lying on the seat beside the door. Inside were four thousand rupees, an Aadhaar card, a bank card and a photograph of a small girl in a school uniform.

Four thousand rupees was more than Imran earned in two weeks at the . For a moment he thought about how many things it could buy. Then he looked at the photograph again.

The address on the card was across the city, an hour away. Imran had planned to watch the cricket match at his friend's house that evening. Instead he took two more buses.

The house was a small one in a lane. A thin man in a vest opened the door, and when he saw the wallet his face went pale and then red.

"I have been looking for it all afternoon," he said. "That money is my daughter's school . The last date is tomorrow."

He tried to give Imran five hundred rupees. Imran shook his head. The man then tried to give him two hundred for the bus. Imran shook his head again, and the man's daughter, the girl from the photograph, came out to see who was at the door.

On the way home Imran missed the whole match. His friend told him India had won by six wickets. Imran said he knew, and that he had been somewhere better.
