Question 240

HardOriginal question

Being class had seemed like an to Aditi until the day Mrs Sharma left the room for ten minutes and handed her a piece of chalk. "Write the names of anyone who talks," she said.

The class was quiet for exactly one minute. Then Vikram, at the back, began to tell a joke. Several boys laughed. Aditi wrote "Vikram" on the board, and the laughter stopped.

Then Kavya, her best friend, leaned across to the girl beside her and whispered something. Aditi heard it clearly. It was only a question about the homework, but it was talking.

Aditi stood with the chalk in her hand. Vikram was watching her. So was everyone else. If she did not write Kavya's name, the whole class would know why. If she did, Kavya might not speak to her for a week.

She wrote "Kavya" under "Vikram".

Kavya's face went red. When Mrs Sharma came back and read the board, Kavya explained about the homework, and Mrs Sharma rubbed out both names. "A question about work is not talking," she said. "And a joke is not a crime. But thank you, Aditi, for being ."

Kavya did not speak to Aditi at lunch. But on the way home she caught up with her at the gate and walked beside her in silence for a while.

"You were right," she said at last. "I would have written your name too."
