Question 18

MediumOriginal question

What is the HCF of 1.2, 0.36 and 2.4?

Options for question 18

Show the answer and explanation
CorrectNot quiteAnswer B

Correct answer: B

Explanation

  1. Make the decimal places equal: 1.20, 0.36, 2.40.

  2. Drop the decimal point: 120, 36, 240. Their HCF is 12.

  3. Put back two decimal places: HCF⁡=0.12\operatorname{HCF} = 0.12.

Worth noting

Taking the HCF of 12, 36 and 24 without equalising the decimal places gives 1.2, which does not divide 0.36. 7.2 is the LCM.
