MediumOriginal question

The Cripps Mission of 1942 offered India

Options for question 71

Show the answer and explanation
CorrectNot quiteAnswer B

Correct answer: B

Explanation

  1. Sir Stafford Cripps came with an offer of dominion status after the war, in return for India's support during it.

  2. By 1942 the Congress demand was Purna Swaraj, complete independence, so the offer was refused.

  3. The failure of the mission is the immediate background to the Quit India call a few months later.

Worth noting

Gandhi's description of the offer — a post-dated cheque — is the line most often quoted about it, and it captures why it was rejected.
