Question 36

MediumOriginal question

A taxi charges a fixed fare plus a fixed amount for every kilometre. A 10 km ride costs ₹230 and a 16 km ride costs ₹338. What is the fixed fare?

CorrectNot quiteAnswer C

Correct answer: C

Explanation

  1. Let the fixed fare be ₹cc and the rate ₹rr per km: c+10r=230c + 10r = 230 and c+16r=338c + 16r = 338.

  2. Subtract: 6r=1086r = 108, so r=18r = 18.

  3. Then c=230−180=50c = 230 - 180 = 50, i.e. ₹50.

Worth noting

₹18 is the per-km rate and ₹23 is simply 230÷10230 \div 10, which ignores the fixed part. ₹108 is the cost of the extra 6 km.
