Question 50

MediumOriginal question

A rectangular kitchen garden is 3 m longer than it is wide and has an area of 108 square metres. What is its width?

CorrectNot quiteAnswer A

Correct answer: A

Explanation

  1. Let the width be ww m; the length is w+3w + 3 m. So w(w+3)=108w(w + 3) = 108.

  2. w2+3w−108=0w^2 + 3w - 108 = 0 factorises as (w+12)(w−9)=0(w + 12)(w - 9) = 0.

  3. A width cannot be negative, so w=9w = 9 m (length 12 m).

Worth noting

12 m is the length. About 10.4 m is 108\sqrt{108}, which treats the garden as a square. 36 m is 108÷3108 \div 3.
