Question 51

MediumOriginal question

In a right-angled triangle, one of the shorter sides is 7 cm longer than the other, and the hypotenuse is 13 cm. How long is the shortest side?

CorrectNot quiteAnswer B

Correct answer: B

Explanation

  1. Let the shortest side be xx cm; the other is x+7x + 7 cm. By Pythagoras, x2+(x+7)2=169x^2 + (x + 7)^2 = 169.

  2. 2x2+14x+49=1692x^2 + 14x + 49 = 169, so x2+7x−60=0x^2 + 7x - 60 = 0.

  3. (x+12)(x−5)=0(x + 12)(x - 5) = 0; a length is positive, so x=5x = 5 cm.

  4. Check: 25+144=16925 + 144 = 169.

Worth noting

12 cm is the other side. 3 cm assumes the two sides add up to the hypotenuse, and 6 cm is just 13−713 - 7.
