Question 6

MediumOriginal question

For what value of xx is 2x+13=x+42\frac{2x + 1}{3} = \frac{x + 4}{2}?

Options for question 6

Show the answer and explanation
CorrectNot quiteAnswer B

Correct answer: B

Explanation

  1. Cross-multiply: 2(2x+1)=3(x+4)2(2x + 1) = 3(x + 4).

  2. Expand: 4x+2=3x+124x + 2 = 3x + 12.

  3. So x=12−2=10x = 12 - 2 = 10.

Worth noting

Forgetting to multiply the 4 by 3 gives 4x+2=3x+44x + 2 = 3x + 4, i.e. 2. Forgetting to multiply the 1 by 2 gives 11. Adding the 2 instead of subtracting it gives 14.
