Question 13

EasyOriginal question

The sum of two numbers is 45 and their difference is 11. What is the larger number?

CorrectNot quiteAnswer C

Correct answer: C

Explanation

  1. Call the numbers xx and yy, with xx the larger, so x+y=45x + y = 45 and x−y=11x - y = 11.

  2. Adding the two equations eliminates yy: 2x=562x = 56, so x=28x = 28.

  3. Then y=45−28=17y = 45 - 28 = 17.

  4. Check: 28+17=4528 + 17 = 45 and 28−17=1128 - 17 = 11.

Worth noting

The 17 on offer is the smaller number. Both appear in the working, so it is worth re-reading which one the question asked for.
