Question 14

EasyOriginal question

Which pair of values satisfies both 2x+3y=132x + 3y = 13 and x−y=−1x - y = -1?

CorrectNot quiteAnswer C

Correct answer: C

Explanation

  1. From the second equation, x=y−1x = y - 1.

  2. Substitute: 2(y−1)+3y=132(y - 1) + 3y = 13, so 5y=155y = 15 and y=3y = 3.

  3. Then x=3−1=2x = 3 - 1 = 2. Check: 4+9=134 + 9 = 13 and 2−3=−12 - 3 = -1.

Worth noting

x=5,y=1x = 5, y = 1 fits only the first equation and x=1,y=2x = 1, y = 2 fits only the second. A solution of the pair must fit both.
