Question 15

EasyOriginal question

If 3x+2y=183x + 2y = 18 and x=2y−2x = 2y - 2, what is x+yx + y?

CorrectNot quiteAnswer B

Correct answer: B

Explanation

  1. Substitute x=2y−2x = 2y - 2: 3(2y−2)+2y=183(2y - 2) + 2y = 18.

  2. So 6y−6+2y=186y - 6 + 2y = 18, giving 8y=248y = 24 and y=3y = 3.

  3. Then x=2(3)−2=4x = 2(3) - 2 = 4, and x+y=7x + y = 7.

Worth noting

3 and 4 are yy and xx on their own. Writing 3(2y−2)3(2y - 2) as 6y−26y - 2 gives y=2.5y = 2.5, x=3x = 3 and a total of 5.5.
