Question 21

MediumOriginal question

For what value of kk do kx+4y=12kx + 4y = 12 and 3x+2y=63x + 2y = 6 have infinitely many solutions?

CorrectNot quiteAnswer D

Correct answer: D

Explanation

  1. Infinitely many solutions needs k3=42=126\frac{k}{3} = \frac{4}{2} = \frac{12}{6}.

  2. 42=126=2\frac{4}{2} = \frac{12}{6} = 2, so k3=2\frac{k}{3} = 2.

  3. Hence k=6k = 6. The first equation is then exactly twice the second.

Worth noting

2 is the common ratio, not kk. 32\frac{3}{2} comes from inverting k3\frac{k}{3} as 3k=2\frac{3}{k} = 2, and 12 from copying the constant term.
