CorrectNot quiteAnswer D

Correct answer: D

Explanation

  1. Discriminant =1+48=49= 1 + 48 = 49, whose square root is 7.

  2. x=1±712x = \frac{1 \pm 7}{12}, giving 812=23\frac{8}{12} = \frac{2}{3} or −612=−12\frac{-6}{12} = -\frac{1}{2}.

  3. The smaller root is −12-\frac{1}{2}.

Worth noting

The denominator is 2a=122a = 12. Dividing by a=6a = 6 gives −1-1, and forgetting to divide gives −6-6. 23\frac{2}{3} is the larger root.
