Question 4

EasyOriginal question

Solve 0.4x+1.2=0.1x+30.4x + 1.2 = 0.1x + 3.

Options for question 4

Show the answer and explanation
CorrectNot quiteAnswer B

Correct answer: B

Explanation

  1. Move terms: 0.4x−0.1x=3−1.20.4x - 0.1x = 3 - 1.2.

  2. So 0.3x=1.80.3x = 1.8.

  3. x=1.80.3=6x = \frac{1.8}{0.3} = 6.

Worth noting

Multiplying the whole equation by 10 first (4x+12=x+30)(4x + 12 = x + 30) removes the decimals and the risk of a slipped decimal point, which is where 0.6 and 60 come from.
