Linear and Quadratic Equations · Question 25 of 66

Question 25

MediumOriginal question

What is the area of the triangle formed by the lines 2x+y=82x + y = 8, x−y=1x - y = 1 and the yy-axis?

Options for question 25

CorrectNot quiteAnswer A

Correct answer: A

Explanation

  1. The lines meet where 3x=93x = 9: x=3x = 3, y=2y = 2.

  2. On the yy-axis (x=0)(x = 0) the lines cut at y=8y = 8 and y=−1y = -1, so the base on the axis is 8−(−1)=98 - (-1) = 9.

  3. The height is the distance of (3,2)(3, 2) from the yy-axis, which is 3.

  4. Area =12×9×3=272= \frac{1}{2} \times 9 \times 3 = \frac{27}{2} square units.

Worth noting

Taking the base as 8−1=78 - 1 = 7 gives 212\frac{21}{2}; forgetting the half gives 27; using the xx-axis instead gives 3.
