Linear and Quadratic Equations · Question 24 of 66

Question 24

MediumOriginal question

At which point do the lines 2x−y=42x - y = 4 and x+y=5x + y = 5 meet?

Options for question 24

Show the answer and explanation
CorrectNot quiteAnswer D

Correct answer: D

Explanation

  1. Add the equations: 3x=93x = 9, so x=3x = 3.

  2. Then y=5−3=2y = 5 - 3 = 2.

  3. Check: 2(3)−2=42(3) - 2 = 4 and 3+2=53 + 2 = 5. The lines meet at (3,2)(3, 2).

Worth noting

(1,−2)(1, -2) lies only on the first line and (4,1)(4, 1) only on the second. (2,3)(2, 3) swaps the coordinates.
