Question 23

MediumOriginal question

If 3x+4y=253x + 4y = 25 and 4x+3y=244x + 3y = 24, what is the value of yy?

Options for question 23

Show the answer and explanation
CorrectNot quiteAnswer C

Correct answer: C

Explanation

  1. Add: 7x+7y=497x + 7y = 49, so x+y=7x + y = 7.

  2. Subtract the first from the second: x−y=−1x - y = -1.

  3. Subtract these two results: 2y=82y = 8, so y=4y = 4 (and x=3x = 3).

Worth noting

When the coefficients swap places, adding and subtracting the equations is faster than ordinary elimination. 7 is x+yx + y and 3 is xx.
