Question 44

EasyOriginal question

What are the solutions of x2−5x=0x^2 - 5x = 0?

Options for question 44

Show the answer and explanation
CorrectNot quiteAnswer A

Correct answer: A

Explanation

  1. Take xx out as a common factor: x(x−5)=0x(x - 5) = 0.

  2. A product is zero when either factor is zero: x=0x = 0 or x=5x = 5.

Worth noting

Dividing both sides by xx throws away the root x=0x = 0. Never divide by an expression that could be zero; factorise instead.
