Question 45

EasyOriginal question

Which quadratic equation has roots 3 and −5-5?

Options for question 45

Show the answer and explanation
CorrectNot quiteAnswer D

Correct answer: D

Explanation

  1. Sum of roots =3+(−5)=−2= 3 + (-5) = -2; product =3×(−5)=−15= 3 \times (-5) = -15.

  2. The equation is x2−(sum)x+product=0x^2 - (\text{sum})x + \text{product} = 0, i.e. x2−(−2)x−15=0x^2 - (-2)x - 15 = 0.

  3. So x2+2x−15=0x^2 + 2x - 15 = 0. Check: (x−3)(x+5)(x - 3)(x + 5) expands to this.

Worth noting

x2−2x−15x^2 - 2x - 15 forgets the minus sign in front of the sum, and gives roots −3-3 and 5 instead.
