CorrectNot quiteAnswer A

Correct answer: A

Explanation

  1. For roots α,β\alpha, \beta: (α−β)2=(α+β)2−4αβ=p2−48(\alpha - \beta)^2 = (\alpha + \beta)^2 - 4\alpha\beta = p^2 - 48.

  2. The difference is 1, so p2−48=1p^2 - 48 = 1 and p2=49p^2 = 49.

  3. p=±7p = \pm 7; since pp is positive, p=7p = 7. (The roots are −3-3 and −4-4.)

Worth noting

−7-7 also gives roots differing by 1 but is ruled out by the condition. 13\sqrt{13} comes from using αβ\alpha\beta instead of 4αβ4\alpha\beta, and 49 is p2p^2.
