Question 46

EasyOriginal question

What are the solutions of 4x2−9=04x^2 - 9 = 0?

Options for question 46

Show the answer and explanation
CorrectNot quiteAnswer D

Correct answer: D

Explanation

  1. 4x2=94x^2 = 9, so x2=94x^2 = \frac{9}{4}.

  2. Taking square roots gives both signs: x=±32x = \pm\frac{3}{2}.

  3. (Or factorise: (2x−3)(2x+3)=0(2x - 3)(2x + 3) = 0.)

Worth noting

A square root taken while solving always gives two values. ±94\pm\frac{9}{4} forgets to take the root at all.
