Linear and Quadratic Equations · Question 8 of 66

Question 8

MediumOriginal question

Find xx if 4(x−3)−2(x+1)=64(x - 3) - 2(x + 1) = 6.

Options for question 8

Show the answer and explanation
CorrectNot quiteAnswer A

Correct answer: A

Explanation

  1. Expand both brackets: 4x−12−2x−2=64x - 12 - 2x - 2 = 6.

  2. Simplify: 2x−14=62x - 14 = 6, so 2x=202x = 20.

  3. Hence x=10x = 10.

Worth noting

The minus sign in front of 2(x+1)2(x + 1) turns BOTH terms negative: −2x−2-2x - 2. Writing −2x+2-2x + 2 gives 8.
