Question 18

EasyOriginal question

Two numbers satisfy x+y=14x + y = 14 and x−y=4x - y = 4. What is xyxy?

Options for question 18

Show the answer and explanation
CorrectNot quiteAnswer A

Correct answer: A

Explanation

  1. Add the equations: 2x=182x = 18, so x=9x = 9.

  2. Then y=14−9=5y = 14 - 9 = 5.

  3. xy=9×5=45xy = 9 \times 5 = 45.

Worth noting

Shortcut: xy=(x+y)2−(x−y)24=196−164=45xy = \frac{(x + y)^2 - (x - y)^2}{4} = \frac{196 - 16}{4} = 45. Forgetting the division by 4 gives 180; 56 is just 14×414 \times 4.
