Question 11

HardOriginal question

Solve 2x−13−x−24=x+56\frac{2x - 1}{3} - \frac{x - 2}{4} = \frac{x + 5}{6}.

CorrectNot quiteAnswer B

Correct answer: B

Explanation

  1. Multiply every term by 12: 4(2x−1)−3(x−2)=2(x+5)4(2x - 1) - 3(x - 2) = 2(x + 5).

  2. Expand: 8x−4−3x+6=2x+108x - 4 - 3x + 6 = 2x + 10.

  3. Simplify: 5x+2=2x+105x + 2 = 2x + 10, so 3x=83x = 8.

  4. Hence x=83x = \frac{8}{3}.

Worth noting

The trap is −3(x−2)-3(x - 2): it is −3x+6-3x + 6, not −3x−6-3x - 6 (which leads to 203\frac{20}{3}). Multiplying the right side by 1 instead of 2 gives 34\frac{3}{4}.
