CorrectNot quiteAnswer C

Correct answer: C

Explanation

  1. Let the number be xx. Then 2x+3=4x−52x + 3 = 4x - 5.

  2. Move terms: 3+5=4x−2x3 + 5 = 4x - 2x, so 2x=82x = 8.

  3. The number is 4. Check: 2(4)+3=112(4) + 3 = 11 and 4(4)−5=114(4) - 5 = 11.

Worth noting

“Five less than four times” is 4x−54x - 5, not 5−4x5 - 4x (which gives 13\frac{1}{3}). 8 is 2x2x, not xx.
