CorrectNot quiteAnswer D

Correct answer: D

Explanation

  1. Here a=1a = 1, b=−4b = -4, c=−1c = -1. Discriminant =16−4(1)(−1)=20= 16 - 4(1)(-1) = 20.

  2. x=4±202=4±252x = \frac{4 \pm \sqrt{20}}{2} = \frac{4 \pm 2\sqrt{5}}{2}.

  3. So x=2±5x = 2 \pm \sqrt{5}.

Worth noting

2±32 \pm \sqrt{3} uses 16−416 - 4 (the sign of cc was dropped). 2±252 \pm 2\sqrt{5} divides only the 4 by 2, not the square root. −2±5-2 \pm \sqrt{5} forgets that −b=+4-b = +4.
