Linear and Quadratic Equations · Question 20 of 66

Question 20

MediumOriginal question

How many solutions does the pair 3x−4y=103x - 4y = 10 and 9x−12y=309x - 12y = 30 have?

Options for question 20

Show the answer and explanation
CorrectNot quiteAnswer C

Correct answer: C

Explanation

  1. Compare ratios: 39=13\frac{3}{9} = \frac{1}{3}, −4−12=13\frac{-4}{-12} = \frac{1}{3}, 1030=13\frac{10}{30} = \frac{1}{3}.

  2. All three ratios are equal, so the second equation is just the first multiplied by 3.

  3. Both equations describe the same line, so every point on it is a solution: infinitely many.

Worth noting

x=2,y=−1x = 2, y = -1 and x=6,y=2x = 6, y = 2 both satisfy the pair, and so do countless other points. Finding one solution does not make it the only one.
