CorrectNot quiteAnswer B

Correct answer: B

Explanation

  1. With nn friends each pays 1200n\frac{1200}{n}; with n+2n + 2 each pays 1200n+2\frac{1200}{n + 2}.

  2. 1200n−1200n+2=50\frac{1200}{n} - \frac{1200}{n + 2} = 50, so 2400n(n+2)=50\frac{2400}{n(n + 2)} = 50 and n(n+2)=48n(n + 2) = 48.

  3. n2+2n−48=0n^2 + 2n - 48 = 0 gives (n+8)(n−6)=0(n + 8)(n - 6) = 0, so n=6n = 6.

  4. Check: ₹200 each for 6 people, ₹150 each for 8.

Worth noting

8 is the group AFTER the extra two join. 4 comes from dropping the 2 in the numerator (n(n+2)=24)(n(n + 2) = 24). 24 is 1200÷501200 \div 50.
