CorrectNot quiteAnswer B

Correct answer: B

Explanation

  1. In order: a, b, 21, d, e with e=a+12e = a + 12 and a total of 100.

  2. So a+b+d+(a+12)=79a + b + d + (a + 12) = 79, i.e. 2a+b+d=672a + b + d = 67.

  3. To make e big, make a big. The least b and d can be are a and 21: 2a+a+21≤672a + a + 21 \le 67 gives a ≤ 15.

  4. With a=15a = 15: b=15b = 15, d=22d = 22, e=27e = 27. Check: 15+15+21+22+27=10015 + 15 + 21 + 22 + 27 = 100.

Worth noting

33 is just 21+1221 + 12, which ignores the total. 28 would need a=16a = 16, which forces 3×16+21=693 \times 16 + 21 = 69 above 67.
