Question 4

EasyOriginal question

Which of the figures is the correct mirror image of the shaded pattern of 6 squares, if the mirror lies along MN beside it on the right?

A 5 by 5 grid with 6 shaded squares, at (row, column) counted from the top-left: (1, 4), (1, 5), (2, 3), (2, 4), (3, 3), (3, 4). A vertical mirror line MN is drawn just to the right of the grid.

CorrectNot quiteAnswer D

Correct answer: D

Explanation

  1. A mirror standing along MN, to the right of the grid, swaps left and right but not top and bottom: a square in column c moves to column 6−c6 - c and stays in its row.

  2. So the shaded squares (1, 4), (1, 5), (2, 3), (2, 4), (3, 3), (3, 4) (row, column) move to (1, 1), (1, 2), (2, 2), (2, 3), (3, 2), (3, 3).

  3. Figure 4 shows exactly these squares.

Worth noting

Figure 1 is the water image (top and bottom swapped), Figure 2 is the grid turned upside down, and Figure 3 is the grid given a quarter turn. A mirror never turns a figure; it only flips it.
