Question 6

EasyOriginal question

The grid below has 5 shaded squares and stands on the edge of still water along the line MN. Which figure is its water image?

A 5 by 5 grid with 5 shaded squares, at (row, column) counted from the top-left: (2, 1), (2, 2), (2, 3), (3, 2), (3, 3). A horizontal water line MN is drawn just below the grid.
Options for question 6

CorrectNot quiteAnswer D

Correct answer: D

Explanation

  1. Water along MN, below the grid, swaps top and bottom but not left and right: a square in row r moves to row 6−r6 - r and stays in its column.

  2. So the shaded squares (2, 1), (2, 2), (2, 3), (3, 2), (3, 3) (row, column) move to (3, 2), (3, 3), (4, 1), (4, 2), (4, 3).

  3. Figure 4 shows exactly these squares.

Worth noting

Figure 1 is the mirror image (left and right swapped), Figure 2 is the grid turned upside down, and Figure 3 is the grid given a quarter turn. A water image flips top to bottom and nothing else.
