Show the answer and explanation
CorrectNot quiteAnswer D

Correct answer: D

Explanation

  1. The remainder on dividing by 9 equals the remainder of the digit sum on dividing by 9.

  2. Digit sum = 8+3+4+2+1+5=238 + 3 + 4 + 2 + 1 + 5 = 23.

  3. 23=9×2+523 = 9 \times 2 + 5, so the remainder is 5.

Worth noting

Stopping at 2+3=52 + 3 = 5 gives the same answer: repeated digit sums work too.
