CorrectNot quiteAnswer A

Correct answer: A

Explanation

  1. Spending = price × consumption. Price becomes 1.25 times, so consumption must become 11.25=0.8\frac{1}{1.25} = 0.8 times.

  2. Cut = 1−0.8=0.21 - 0.8 = 0.2, i.e. 20%. (Shortcut: 25100+25×100=20%\frac{25}{100 + 25} \times 100 = 20\%.)

Worth noting

Cutting consumption by the same 25% overshoots: 1.25×0.75=0.93751.25 \times 0.75 = 0.9375, so spending would fall.

Price × consumption = constant expenditure
