MediumOriginal question

Four friends, Ishaan, Mehak, Tenzin and Revathi, meet at a sports camp. Each comes from a different city (Pune, Shillong, Madurai or Bhopal) and each plays a different sport (chess, badminton, kabaddi or swimming). The following is known:

1. Tenzin is from Shillong.

2. The person from Madurai plays badminton.

3. Mehak plays neither kabaddi nor chess.

4. Neither Ishaan nor Revathi is from Pune.

5. The chess player is from neither Bhopal nor Madurai.

6. Ishaan does not play badminton.

CorrectNot quiteAnswer D

Correct answer: D

Explanation

  1. Clue 1 gives Tenzin = Shillong. Clue 4 rules Pune out for Ishaan and Revathi, so Mehak = Pune.

  2. Clue 5: the chess player is from Pune or Shillong. Mehak (Pune) does not play chess (clue 3), so Tenzin plays chess.

  3. Badminton belongs to the Madurai person (clue 2), and Mehak is from Pune, so Mehak cannot play badminton either: Mehak swims.

  4. Kabaddi and badminton are left for Ishaan and Revathi. Ishaan does not play badminton (clue 6), so Ishaan plays kabaddi and Revathi plays badminton, which makes Revathi = Madurai and Ishaan = Bhopal.

  5. The kabaddi player is Ishaan, who is from Bhopal.

Worth noting

Madurai is tempting if you pair Ishaan with the only city left before using clue 2; the Madurai person must play badminton.
