Question 9

MediumOriginal question

Statement: The sports secretary of Ranipur announces: "The inter-college football final will be played on Saturday if the ground is dry, and on Sunday if it is not."

Conclusions:

I. The final will be played on Saturday.

II. The final will be played on Sunday.

Which conclusions follow?

Options for question 9

Show the answer and explanation
CorrectNot quiteAnswer C

Correct answer: C

Explanation

  1. I does not follow on its own: the final is on Saturday only if the ground is dry, and the statement does not say whether it will be.

  2. II does not follow on its own either: the final is on Sunday only if the ground is not dry.

  3. But the ground is either dry or not dry, so one of the two must happen. I and II cannot both be true, and one of them has to be. Either I or II follows.

Worth noting

Use "Either I or II" only when neither item follows alone, the two cannot both be true, and the statement guarantees that one of them is.
