The Basel Convention governs

Options for question 46

Show the answer and explanation
CorrectNot quiteAnswer C

Correct answer: C

Explanation

  1. The Basel Convention controls the transboundary movement of hazardous wastes and their disposal.

  2. It was a response to hazardous waste being shipped from richer countries to poorer ones for cheap disposal.

  3. Its central requirement is prior informed consent: a state must agree before waste can be sent to it.

Worth noting

Treaties are often named for the city where they were concluded, which carries no clue at all about the subject. Basel, Rotterdam and Stockholm are three separate chemicals and waste conventions, and their names have to be learnt against their subjects.
