Question 60

EasyOriginal question

What is the set of all points at which f(x)=x+1x2−5x+6f(x) = \frac{x + 1}{x^{2} - 5x + 6} is continuous?

Options for question 60

CorrectNot quiteAnswer D

Correct answer: D

Explanation

  1. A rational function is continuous at every point where its denominator is not 0.

  2. x2−5x+6=(x−2)(x−3)x^{2} - 5x + 6 = (x - 2)(x - 3) is 0 only at x=2x = 2 and x=3x = 3, so ff is continuous on R−{2,3}\mathbb{R} - \{2, 3\}.

Worth noting

R−{−1}\mathbb{R} - \{-1\} removes the zero of the numerator; only the zeros of the denominator leave the domain.
