Determinants, Adjoint & Inverse · Question 77 of 87

Question 77

HardOriginal question

How many solutions does the system x+y+z=2x + y + z = 2, 2x+2y+2z=52x + 2y + 2z = 5, x−y+z=1x - y + z = 1 have?

CorrectNot quiteAnswer C

Correct answer: C

Explanation

  1. The first two rows of coefficients are proportional, so ∣A∣=0|A| = 0 and there is no unique solution.

  2. (adj⁡A)B=[−202]≠O(\operatorname{adj} A)B = \begin{bmatrix}-2 \\ 0 \\ 2\end{bmatrix} \ne O, so the system is inconsistent. Directly: the second equation says x+y+z=52x + y + z = \frac{5}{2}, the first says 2.

Worth noting

Infinitely many would need the second equation to be exactly twice the first, with right side 4.
