Question 47

HardOriginal question

What is dydx\frac{dy}{dx} for y=cos⁡−1(2x2−1)y = \cos^{-1}\left(2x^{2} - 1\right), 0<x<10 < x < 1?

CorrectNot quiteAnswer A

Correct answer: A

Explanation

  1. Put x=cos⁡θx = \cos \theta: 2cos⁡2θ−1=cos⁡2θ2\cos^{2} \theta - 1 = \cos 2\theta, so the function is 2θ=2cos⁡−1x2\theta = 2\cos^{-1} x.

  2. So dydx=−21−x2\frac{dy}{dx} = - \frac{2}{\sqrt{1 - x^{2}}}.

Worth noting

21−x2\frac{2}{\sqrt{1 - x^{2}}} loses the minus sign of cos⁡−1\cos^{-1}.
